When was the Club Founded?
The Border Monochrome Camera Club was formed in 1976 making it the oldest club in the UK for black and white photography enthusiasts.
The small but enthusiastic group of amateur photographers seek to create the highest quality images using either traditional film cameras or digital methods, from high end Digital cameras to the humble mobile phone. Members live in the beautiful countryside of the Welsh Borders, in and around the small town of Kington in Herefordshire.
The club has witnessed steady transition from traditional photographic processes to modern digital imaging. Its members continue to represent both approaches but share a common interest in valuing the appeal of a well-produced photographic print as well as a breathtaking computer image. A number of the club's past members have moved onto to become professional photographers.
What Does the Club Offer New Members?
New members have the opportunity to learn from friendly advice from monthly internal competitions with a lively exchange of ideas.
The club also holds inter club competitions with neighbouring camera clubs. There is also the option to display the clubs work in the Burton Hotel, where they can be put up for sale if the author wishes.
What's a Typical Meeting Like?
For the in person meetings, we meet on the first Friday of that month at 7.30pm at the Burton Hotel in Kington. There is an assigned photography topic and members bring along their images (which may be mounted some months or in a digital format) that are judged anonymously. The member's then critique all the photos, which is an excellent way of improving everyone's photographic skills.
On the months the club doesn't meet in person, the club runs the same competitions but images are emailed out to all members, who then send their scores in.
Over the 12 months these scores are tallied and the Photographer of the year receives a trophy at our annual Dinner.
What does it cost to Join?
There is a £20 yearly membership fee, payable at the begining of the year, that goes towards general club expences as well as facilitating entry into external competitions and the printing and mounting of the top three entries of the monthly competition so they can be displayed in the bar at the Burton Hotel.
